Bonaparte's gull

This first-winter Bonaparte's gull was found by James Packer on 22 March at Cheddar reservoir. The last local bird turned up at about the same time of year in Frome during 2006. This bird was much more obliging. It was a challenge to photograph is driving NW winds, though the wind was often useful, holding the bird in mid-air for flight photos. Identification features include the delicate black bill, the grey nape, the translucent underside to the primaries, and the bubble-gum pink legs.
