A couple of trips to Ham Wall (24th and 30th) - nothing spectacular, but up to 5 sightings of bittern and marsh harrier, great white egret, hobbies and common tern. 1st-5th. The annual Orielton field course, with a great bunch of students. We watched bats flying in front of a full moon, had a cracking day on Skomer amongst the puffins, saw porpoises riding the waves, had some great laughs in The Speculation pub and some sharp scientific discussions. Only about 42 lesser horseshoe bats now at the centre after the old boiler has been replaced, though about 9 greater horseshoe bats have moved in. Around 125 soprano pipistrelles in the warden's house. Bird highlights included a great skua off Stackpole Head in strong winds, and at least 8 choughs on Skomer. |
